Improving sleep and learning in rehabilitation after stroke

We are looking for volunteers to participate in a study investigating an online sleep improvement programme and seeking to understand the role of sleep in movement learning after stroke.

What is the study about?

Sleep is important for learning new movements and skills.

It is often worse after stroke and so we want to test whether an online cognitive behavioural therapy insomnia programme called Sleepio can improve this.

We also want to test whether improving sleep impacts on movement learning as part of rehabilitation after stroke.

We hope the study will help improve sleep for stroke survivors in the future. We also hope to better understand the role of sleep in recovery after stroke, and that this will in the future lead to the development of new treatments to improve rehabilitation outcomes.

What will it Involve?

This study involves wearing a sleep monitor on your wrist, performing a movement learning task with your affected hand and completing questionnaires about your sleep, mood and feelings of fatigue.

Some participants will be asked to undergo an online sleep improvement programme in addition to usual care. All steps will take part in your home.

There are no anticipated expenses for you to take part in the study. You will receive £50 as a thank you for your time upon completion of the study.

Who can take part?

We are recruiting stroke survivors who are aged 18 and over.

You will need to have had a stroke that affected the movement of your hand and/or arm but have sufficient movement to be able to perform the movement tasks (the researcher will give you more information about what this entails).

You should also feel that you have problems with your sleep and be interested in accessing a programme which may improve your sleep.
